What Foods Can You Buy With SNAP Benefits?
Do you know that it’s not every food that you can buy with your Snap benefits? If your snap benefits application has been approved and you have been issued an EBT card, then read on to see food which you can purchase with your EBT card.
Before we go down to the list of what you can and cannot buy with your EBT Card, I want you to remind you that
the main purpose of food stamps is to help needy individuals and families buy nutritious food which they can consume at home.
So, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, below are the food which you can purchase with your Snap benefit. If you go contrary to the list of food stated, you may be jailed for that.
What Foods Can You Buy With SNAP Benefits?
Households CAN use SNAP benefits to buy:
- Foods for the household to eat, such as:
- Loaves of bread and cereals;
- Fruits and vegetables;
- Meats, fish and poultry; and
- Dairy products.
- Seeds and plants which produce food for the household to eat.
Furthermore, Energy drinks that have a nutrition facts label are eligible foods. Also, live seafood such as lobsters, fish, and shellfish may be purchased with SNAP benefits.
Households CANNOT use SNAP benefits to purchase:
- Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco
- Any nonfood items, such as:
- Pet foods
- Soaps
- Paper products
- Household supplies
- Vitamins and medicines
- Food that will be eaten in the store
- Hot foods.
Items such as birthday and other special occasion cakes are eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits as long as the value of non-edible decorations does not exceed 50 percent of the purchase price of the cake.
